When I first started learning design on my own, many of the books I read suggested that finding a mentor was a great way to learn. This is of course true for both designers and developers. While the idea is great indeed, trying to make this happen is a lot harder than you think.
I spent an entire month emailing designers from all over the world. At first I aimed high and tried contacting those who inspired me. Naturally they all said no because they were to busy. So, I went to the plan B list…then c…then d….
Sometimes I would email 10 or 20 a day. All said no or that they were too busy. Most of those looking for mentorship are looking for nothing more than some constructive criticism and some advice here and there. This can all be done one or two emails a week. How can anyone not have time for that?
Maybe Im really just that bad of a designer, but I feel my bank account would argue that fact. So, I guess my question this week is; would you ever mentor an aspiring designer or developer?
If not, are there any reasons other than time?
