Mail Chimp Review: Perfect Mail Campaign Service for Designers

Over the years, I have looked into every mail campaign service out there to handle my email campaigns and newsletters to my design clients. Most of the services out there are either more feature rich than I need them to be or to poorly put together for the price they were charging. I had pretty much given up hope until I came across Mail Chimp.

Idea for Freelance Designers
I won’t lie, one of the first things that got me about Mail Chimp was its design. It is simple, colorful, playful, and especially easy to use. What’s not to like about that? Aesthetics aside, Mail Chimp had just the amount of features I was looking for to help promote my design services and stay in touch with my clients.

Once you sign up and get your account running, you can have your first email campaign ready in 15 minutes or less. Mail Chimp also offers designer and developers the ability to easily customize their campaigns to the style they want. IAs I mentioned before, Mail Chimp had all the features I wanted for my design business. It allowed me to easily add new customers to the mailing list, create html and text based emails, and it even gave me some super pretty stats pages.

Where You Can Get One:
Mail Chimp Website

Why Its Worth Your Money:

  • Has all the features you need, and none of the ones you don’t
  • Comes with easy to read and understand stats for each campaign
  • Pricing plans work for just about any budget
  • Site is well laid out and easy to use
  • It only taks about 15 minutes to get your first email list and campaign ready

Final Thoughts
Yes, the features of Mail Chimp aren’t unique, just about every mail campaign manager out there has them. The problem is, they usually have these features and 20 others as well. Mail Chimp cuts out all the bull and really focuses on making what you do need, work well. They offer a free trial period and haves that are extremely competitive for the industry. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this product to freelancers, designers, developers, and other small business owners.

I was a Mail Chimp client for about 3 months. I was lured in by their pretty design and good pricing for monthly emails.

Then I had a client who gave me a list that wasn’t properly cleaned and it got sent through the Mail Chimp system. It was an honest mistake and we made every effort to make up for it (apologized, cleaned the email list, removed the old one, etc.). MailChimp, however, immediately assumed that we were malicious spammers and started treating us with arrogance and contempt. We complied with everything they asked of us and at each step they gave us more flak. When we finally requested that we actually get on the phone with someone, they replied that they do not do phone calls, called us “careless” and “suspicious” and asserted that we needed to get on their “good side”.

I’ve been in this business for 10 years. I’ve worked with numerous vendors. I’ve run email campaigns off my own servers. BELIEVE ME when I say I understand the importance of adhering to white hat practices for email delivery (I know MailChimp wouldn’t have a business if they didn’t). That said, I’ve worked with numerous other A-list providers (Constant Contact and Campaign Monitor to name two) who are every bit as professional, much more flexible, and much less condescending.

I agree with your comment Eric. I had the same issue with these folks. I had extracted a list from a Constant Contact account of a client and imported into Mail Chimp. I have spent no less then 6 hours trying to pass their super-secret FBI like clearance and yes, same condescending attitude.

I have 10 clients and lists of over 20K. i’ll stick with Constant Contact and a jank interface then try and deal with a bunch of Elite assholes. We didn’t even get to send the email…..
