Creative of the Week - Gino from You the Designer

ginoThis weeks creative mind comes from the man behind an increasingly popular design blog, You the Designer.

Tell us a little bit about why you started “You the Designer.”
You the Designer actually started off as a project for school, but I wanted to turn it into a successful business as well. I love design and I always wanted to try out blogging so I did my research and formed my attack plan for creating and running You the Designer.
It has turned out so much better then I expected and I absolutely love sharing all my tips and resources with other graphic designers.

Do you use your blog to promote your design business at all? If so, how is that working out for you?

No I actually don’t, but once my new portfolio site is done I may add it to the blogroll. I prefer keeping them separate, but I do plan on promoting other projects on my blog.

How important do you think blogs are as a promotional tool?
I think blogs can be an incredible promotional tool if you have quality content and regular visitors who enjoy the blog and trust you.

How would you describe your design style?
I think my normal design style is very structured and clean, although I try not trap myself into one style. I like to be able to adapt to my clients needs, like a design chameleon!

What is important to you in a good design?
I think there are a lot of important factors, but I guess some of the most important aspects would be structure, color, relationships between word and image, concept and a few other things.

When did you start freelancing and why?
I started freelancing a little over 4 years ago because of my love for computers and design. Graphic design seemed like the perfect fit and I enjoy working from home and having time to work on my other projects such as my graphic design blog, You the Designer.

What have you learned about the design business while freelancing?
I have learned that it takes a lot of hard work, networking, research and organization if you want to be successful and enjoy what you do.

What advice would you give to other designers trying to break into freelance work?
Get a basic portfolio site up as soon as you can, start networking with other designers and people that compliment your skills. Read lots of articles and forums on design and business. Start learning about web design, search engine optimization and marketing and never stop trying to improve yourself!
