No freelancer should be without a contract.

Contracts and forms for designers are an important part of any design business. No matter if you are a graphic designer or web designer, a solid contract or good pre-project questionnaire can make every project go smoother.

If you don’t already have a good contract or some standard business forms made up for your design business already, what are you waiting for? Don’t be that designer who waits until AFTER he has a non-paying client to look into make a design contract. Put some time aside one day and get it done.

There are plenty of blank contracts for designers out there. If nothing else, find one of those and fill them out. They usually take about 20 minutes to read over and add in your companies information.

Danny, thanks for the great links. They were very helpful. My inspiration for developing my own design contract was all the bad clients I’ve had. I followed the AIGA document and just picked parts relevant to what I needed to cover, then I re-worded the terms to suit my own needs. I am also thinking of running my contract by a lawyer just to get his/her legal advice and suggestions.

It was certainly interesting for me to read this blog. Thanks the author for it. I like such themes and anything connected to this matter. I would like to read more on that blog soon.

Hey Danny. Thanks for the nice list. Making sure you’re properly paid for your work is one of the biggest challenges for all small business owners–but it’s particularly problematic when you’re selling web design/development, graphic design, SEO or other services that don’t require full payment up front.

I found this article a while back on Sitepoint that provides some good tips on how to avoid some common payment pitfalls encountered by web developers. I thought your audience might find it helpful.

    Hey Nina!

Yeah, that is a decent post on SitePoint. I think I have read it before.

It’s especially hard when trying to explain to client why they have to pay 100% upfront for things like server side work and live website changes.
